windsurfing in venezuala

i have just returned to the states from two weeks travelling in brazil and venezuala.
in venezuala i spent 3 days on margarita island, and surfed at el yaque beach.

the entire beach consisted of people from round the world working at wind and kite surf rental places. around 40-50 surfers were out daily on beautiful shallow turqoise waters with really consistent wind.

i highly recommend getting to this beach if ever find yourself near the south caribbean..

  • I was there in, let's see... 1999 and then again in 2001. Margarita Island is PARADISE for someone of my skills (or lack of!) level. I rented my gear from Vela, although there are heaps of rental companies lining the beach. Prices are very affordable.

The one thing annoying-- the little local boys laughing at me being thrown around like a ragdoll, yelling over to me in Spanish, "Get a smaller sail!" and then doing circles around me and spraying me with their wake, usually doing some sort of wild tricks to rub salt in my 'wounds'.

Really, I'm at the point with my windsurfing where I'm going too fast for my comfort but without much control, so it's a crazy level, and there is NO BETTER PLACE THAN MARGARITA ISLAND to enjoy it, with it's chest-high depths for what seems like forever. I miss it...
